The UN’s humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, described current aid deliveries to Gaza as “a drop in the ocean,” telling Al Jazeera that while recent access is “a positive step in the right direction… it’s clear we need to get large quantities of aid in on a much, much larger scale than we’ve managed so far.”
Fletcher cited persistent obstacles preventing effective aid distribution: “We can’t just turn up and cross the border. That’s what we should be able to do, that’s what international law requires, but we’re not at that point yet.” He specifically pointed to security risks, closed crossing points, visa denials, and customs delays as major hindrances.
“Rampant hunger exists in Gaza,” Fletcher concluded, emphasizing the urgency. “We are mobilizing to deliver as much as possible… but we will be judged by results.”
