UK to Recognize Palestinian State in September Unless Israel Meets Gaza Conditions

Ending weeks of caution amid pressure from Emmanuel Macron and fears of Donald Trump’s backlash, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has yielded to increasingly explicit demands from Labour ministers and MPs. “The United Kingdom will recognize the Palestinian state in September, ahead of the UN General Assembly,” the Prime Minister announced, unless Israel takes substantial measures to end the “appalling situation” in Gaza and meets other conditions, including a ceasefire.

Following France, Britain will become the second UN Security Council member, the second G7 nation, and the 149th country to recognize Palestinian statehood. The move primarily aims to pressure Israel to end the war in Gaza and address a humanitarian tragedy claiming 60,000 lives, with survivors facing starvation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the decision: “Starmer rewards Hamas’s monstrous terrorism and punishes its victims. A jihadist state on Israel’s border will threaten Britain tomorrow.” Conversely, Macron’s France welcomed it: “Together we reopen the prospect for peace.” France had previously failed to secure joint recognition from London and Berlin ahead of the September UN assembly.

Sir Keir, who recalled ministers from vacation for an emergency meeting, ultimately aligned with a conditional announcement. This contrasts with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s stance favouring a “negotiated” solution within a peace process. Unlike Starmer, the Christian Democrat leader faces less internal pressure from pro-Palestinian sentiment, which has surged within Labour, causing explicit discontent in government and among voters. This pressure pushed the British PM to defy Donald Trump, who dismissed recognition as “worthless” and reportedly “froze out” Macron over the issue.

Starmer clarified: “I have always said we would recognize a Palestinian state as a contribution to a genuine peace process, at a time when it would have maximum impact on the two-state solution. With that solution now threatened, it is time to act.” Anticipating Israeli criticism of appeasement, Starmer demanded Hamas release all remaining hostages and fully disarm to ensure it “no longer plays any key role” in Palestinian territory.

Paris, London, and Berlin have formed an axis to end the war in Gaza, mirroring their coordination on Ukraine. Merz announced that the Foreign Ministers of France, Britain, and Germany will travel jointly to Israel next Thursday to present their unified position: demanding an end to military operations in Gaza and immediate access for international aid. While acknowledging international criticism of limited airdrop effectiveness, Germany will send aid planes tomorrow, followed by France (40 tonnes) on Friday. Britain joined the aid initiative immediately after Israeli clearance. Starmer reportedly briefed Netanyahu by phone before the announcement, likely stressing the move wasn’t anti-Israel.

Separately, the Netherlands targeted the Israeli government, declaring far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich *personae non gratae* for “repeatedly inciting settler violence,” “supporting illegal settlement expansion,” and “advocating ethnic cleansing in Gaza.” Smotrich retorted: “The Netherlands has surrendered to radical Islam’s lies.”
