Six military personnel—four from the Financial Police (Guardia di Finanza) and two from the Coast Guard (Guardia Costiera)—have been ordered to stand trial for their roles in the deadly 2023 migrant shipwreck off Steccato di Cutro. The incident on February 26 claimed 94 lives, including 35 minors. Judge Elisa Marchetto, the preliminary hearings judge (GUP) in Crotone, issued the indictment after closing the preliminary phase. The defendants face charges of negligent shipwreck and multiple counts of negligent homicide, linked to their alleged failure to activate the Search and Rescue (SAR) protocol during the disaster.
