Patrizia Messina Denaro, the 55-year-old sister of convicted mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, has been released from Vigevano prison in Pavia after serving a 14-and-a-half-year sentence. Arrested in 2013, she has returned to her hometown of Castelvetrano under a mandatory check-in requirement.
Patrizia Messina Denaro is reported to possess intimate knowledge of her brother’s secrets and managed the intricate communication network for the fugitive boss, who was finally arrested in 2023 after evading capture for three decades. She was convicted on charges of mafia association and extortion.
Her prosecution stemmed from a major investigation in December 2013 that dismantled the network of key lieutenants and associates surrounding the then-fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro. The probe revealed Patrizia’s pivotal role in holding the organization together in her incarcerated husband’s absence. The dawn raids on December 13th, 2013, in Castelvetrano isolated Messina Denaro, then 51, who had been wanted since 1993 for crimes including mafia association, multiple murders, massacre, devastation, and explosives possession.
The operation resulted in 30 arrests. Alongside Patrizia, those detained included her nephew Francesco Guttadauro, cousins Giovanni Filardo, Lorenzo Cimarosa, and Mario Messina Denaro, plus entrepreneurs, professionals, and public officials accused of favoring construction companies linked to the boss. Investigators severed critical strands of a vast web built on friendships, collusion, and business ties that had made the Messina Denaro clan the most economically powerful within the Sicilian Mafia. Patrizia Messina Denaro acted as a conduit, relaying messages from her brother to clan members and overseeing criminal operations.
