Italy’s Senate green-lighted a pivotal constitutional reform bill for the second time on Wednesday, voting to separate the career paths of prosecutors and judges. The legislation passed with 106 votes in favor, 61 against, and 11 abstentions.
The bill, which aims to revise the constitution to establish distinct career tracks within the magistracy, will now return to the Chamber of Deputies for a third reading. It had previously been approved by the lower house on January 16th. Following the Chamber’s next vote, it must return to the Senate once more for final approval.
Protests erupted in the Senate chamber during the vote, with opposition lawmakers displaying placards condemning the reform. Justice Minister Carlo Nordio was present in the chamber for the proceedings.
