Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini expressed grave concerns about potential tariffs, stating: “My priority is creating jobs and wealth for this country. Clearly, tariffs are bad news. I don’t believe Europe should engage in a trade war with the US and China—we’d undoubtedly lose. We need calm, common sense, and negotiation.”
Speaking at the inauguration of the Tor Vergata highway link, Salvini sharply criticized aggressive posturing in trade discussions: “If someone talks about ‘bazookas,’ they’re harming negotiations, Italy, and Europe. I laugh—or tremble—at the idea of anyone negotiating with Trump using ‘bazooka’ rhetoric. That’s how talks collapse.”
He dismissed inflammatory remarks as possibly “nonsense uttered by someone overheated,” adding: “I hope it was just foolishness from someone feeling the heat.”
