PM Meloni Welcomes US-EU Tariff Truce, Seeks Details on Agricultural Exemptions and Gas

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed cautious approval of the newly reached US-EU tariff agreement while stressing significant details remain unresolved. Speaking to reporters in Addis Ababa, Meloni stated: “I view positively the fact that an agreement was reached. I have always thought, and continue to think, that a trade escalation between Europe and the United States would have had unpredictable and potentially devastating consequences.”

However, Meloni clarified she has not yet seen “sufficient” details of the accord. She emphasized the preliminary nature of the deal, noting: “We will need to study the details of the agreement, we will need to work further on it because what was signed yesterday is a broad understanding, legally non-binding. Therefore, we still need to work on the specifics; there is still ground to cover.”

She highlighted several key areas requiring clarification: “We need to verify what the possible exemptions are, particularly for certain agricultural products. There are a number of elements missing, just as I don’t know what is being referred to when discussing investments or gas purchases, etcetera. I cannot evaluate this until I have clear data.”
