Meta has demonstrated in a peer-reviewed Nature study that surface electromyography (sEMG) wrist sensors can replace traditional computer accessories like keyboards and mice, potentially offering new independence to people with motor disabilities. The non-invasive technology detects electrical signals from wrist and hand muscles to recognize gestures equivalent to keystrokes, mouse movements, and text input.
According to the research, this enables sEMG-based computer interfaces that eliminate conventional peripherals. Users could interact with projected digital keyboards or mice through natural hand and wrist motions. The development builds on Meta’s September reveal of an experimental Orion AR glasses-linked bracelet using sEMG to translate muscle signals into on-screen actions.
Meta stated the technology represents “the most advanced method developed for simple, intuitive, and adaptable device control” usable by most individuals. To accelerate research, the company has released an open-access repository containing over 100 hours of sEMG recordings.
