A powerful statement against all wars, past and present, unfolded last night, July 27th, at the Segesta Teatro Festival. Actress Laura Morante channeled the anguish of Greek and Trojan women, united across centuries by a resounding “no” to every conflict. This timeless defiance culminated in Morante waving a Palestinian flag at the conclusion of her performance. In “Notte di sfolgorante tenebra” (Night of Dazzling Darkness), Morante gave voice to characters including Clytemnestra, Electra, Helen, Cassandra, Hecuba, and Andromache, each portraying the devastation of war uniquely. Daniele Costantini directed the production, featuring a text written by Morante herself, accompanied by Davide Alogna (violin) and Luca Provenzani (cello), with music by Bach, Glière, Ravel, and Handel/Halvorsen.
This protest aligns with a broader mobilization within Italian cinema against the famine in Gaza. Directors, festival heads, actors, producers, and industry figures, including Riccardo Milani and Alberto Barbera, have launched a shared initiative to break the silence surrounding wars, specifically addressing the crisis in Gaza.
