Moussa Sangare, currently imprisoned in Milan’s San Vittore jail for the July 30, 2023, random murder of jogger Sharon Verzeni in Terno d’Isola, has been sentenced to three years and eight months by Bergamo Court in a fast-track trial. This separate conviction relates to domestic abuse against his mother Kadiatou Diallo and sister Awa Sangare, with whom he lived in Suisio, Bergamo province.
Bergamo prosecutors had sought a four-year term, while defense attorney Giacomo Maj—also representing Sangare in the murder case—requested acquittal. The abuse occurred in 2019 but was reported in May 2024, two months before Verzeni’s killing.
Notably, Sangare initially confessed to the murder but abruptly declared innocence during his latest Bergamo Assize Court hearing. The next hearing in that trial is scheduled for September 22.
Today’s conviction—with reasoning to be filed within 60 days—relied partly on psychiatric assessments. Court-appointed expert Valentina Stanga (University of Brescia) deemed Sangare mentally competent to stand trial, contradicting defense expert Alessandro Calvo’s finding of incapacity. Maj described his absent client as “perpetually disoriented” and unable to comprehend his actions.
