The Mafia’s murder of Judge Paolo Borsellino and his escort officers—Emanuela Loi, Agostino Catalano, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina, and Claudio Traina—occurred less than two months after the Capaci bombing. This attack aimed to subvert democratic institutions through intimidation and fear.
“Democracy proved stronger,” Mattarella affirmed. “The killers and their instigators were defeated and convicted. On this day of remembrance, our sorrow for the brutally ended lives and solidarity with the victims’ families remains as intense as thirty-three years ago. Our gratitude is everlasting towards those servants of the State who, with dedication and sacrifice, fought the Mafia cancer, defended freedom and legality, and enabled society to react. The lives of Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone stand as testimony and symbols of magistrates’ dedication to justice. Borsellino did not retreat after Capaci; he pressed forward. Honouring his memory means following his lesson of dignity and legality, ensuring his message reaches younger generations.”
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni echoed this sentiment on social media, calling Borsellino “a man who sacrificed his life for truth, justice, and Italy.” She pledged his memory would be upheld daily, stating: “His example lives on in those who fight daily, often away from the spotlight, for a fairer Italy, free from Mafias, wrongdoing, and fear. There is no freedom without justice, no State without legality. We owe gratitude and respect to the magistrates, law enforcement, and public servants who chose courage, even at the cost of their lives. They charted an unforgettable path. That legacy remains strong, and we will carry it forward daily with respect, determination, and love for our Nation.”
Senate President Ignazio La Russa described the massacre as “the Mafia striking at the heart of the State.” He called Via D’Amelio “an open wound in collective memory,” but also “a symbolic place renewing our resolve never to surrender to crime and indifference. The sacrifice of Borsellino and his agents demands our coherence, courage, and responsibility. Memory cannot be a ritual gesture; it must translate daily into concrete commitment for a fairer, freer Nation faithful to legality.”
Chamber of Deputies President Lorenzo Fontana expressed his “deep solidarity” with the victims’ families, hailing Borsellino’s “legacy of courage and determination” as a daily inspiration. In tribute, the Chamber displayed the judge’s briefcase, recovered from the attack site. “At the heart of the institution,” Fontana stated, “that briefcase is a tangible symbol of his enduring memory, alive in the values Borsellino represented.”
