The city of Marca is implementing an unconventional rat eradication plan featuring traps baited with Prosecco grapes to combat its estimated 800,000-strong rodent population – equating to 10 rats per resident. This unique approach emerged during the presentation of a municipal task force focused on curbing rat proliferation without harming the local ecosystem.
The Prosecco-baited trap concept was developed by Mayer Braun, a historic pest control company from Carbonera (Treviso) with experience in major cities like London, New York, and Dubai, which contributed to the city’s plan. “We considered using Prosecco grapes inside our baits,” explained Mayer Braun CEO Barbara Donadon. “Rats adapt to local tastes, scavenge waste, and are attracted to human discoveries. Therefore, we devised this pairing with the local grape.”
The strategy also includes enhanced monitoring systems and a public awareness campaign. Residents will receive an informational brochure outlining six key measures to reduce rat presence: improved management of household and organic waste, caution regarding outdoor pet food bowls, and preventive steps for establishments with outdoor dining areas. A targeted campaign will advise restaurateurs on best practices to limit rodent food sources.
A further innovation involves employing natural predators. The plan promotes nesting by tawny owls, nocturnal raptors, as biological rat control allies, facilitated by an appointed wildlife expert.
