Hjorth’s Sentence Reduced Again in Killing of Officer Cerciello Rega

Gabriele Natale Hjorth has received a further sentence reduction for the fatal stabbing of Vice Brigadier Mario Cerciello Rega. The killing occurred on the night of July 25-26, 2019, in Rome’s Prati district.

The Court of Assizes reduced the sentence to 10 years and 11 months during a third appeal hearing. This decision sparked outrage from the slain officer’s widow, who stated, “Wounding was the denigrating action towards ‘my Hero,’ an attempt to deny his recognition as such.”

The appellate judges accepted the prosecution’s request to reduce the penalty by five months from the previous 11 years and 4 months sentence imposed in the second appeal. This adjustment followed a March 12th ruling by the Supreme Court of Cassation, which ordered a new appeal limited solely to the sentencing aspect while confirming Hjorth’s criminal liability as irrevocable. Hjorth is currently under house arrest.

Franco Coppi, the civil party lawyer representing the widow, reacted sharply: “It’s minimal moral satisfaction considering we started from a life sentence, and they are getting off relatively cheaply. Six levels of judgment for such a case seem excessive.”

Rosa Maria Esilio, the widow, expressed profound indignation through her lawyer, Massimo Ferrandino: “This interminable trial, marked by shameful procedural disloyalty aimed at confusing responsibilities and motivations for base interests in securing sentence reductions, has only added more pain to the suffering for my husband Mario’s violent death.” She added, “The trampling and defiling of the memory of a young husband, fallen while performing his duty, by protagonists of this tragic judicial affair, aided by certain media and politicians, has only revealed the inhuman face of a false piety I reject entirely.”

Esilio emphasized her husband did not seek hero status, describing him as “a hero with simple dreams, like many state servants dedicated to the community through sacrifice and abnegation, honouring their oath of loyalty, with loved ones waiting at home and plans for the future. Feeling abandoned and overwhelmed shouldn’t be an emotion experienced by those who dedicate their lives to others.”
