The “Palio delle barche” traditional boat race festival returns to Passignano sul Trasimeno from Sunday, July 20 to Sunday, July 27. This year’s edition introduces a youth component, with children aged 8-14 from the town’s districts participating in the inaugural “Palio dei ragazzi” on Saturday, July 26—the day before the main competition among Passignano’s four districts: San Donato, Centro Storico, Centro 2, and Oliveto.
The festival culminates on Sunday, July 27 at 6:30 PM with a three-stage finale: a lake race, steep castle stair climbs, and a sprint through the village’s narrow alleys—all while crews carry a 60-kilogram boat on their shoulders. The spectacle reenacts a 1945 battle between Perugia’s rival Baglioni and Oddi noble families.
Mayor Sandro Pasquali, newly appointed event coordinator Stefano Baldoncini, and deputy coordinator Gaia Rossi presented the program in Perugia, joined by regional councilors Cristian Betti and Simona Meloni.
“This Palio embodies tradition, community, art, and environmental stewardship,” emphasized Pasquali. “It’s Trasimeno’s signature lake celebration, uniquely held on its waters, where youth recreate our fishermen’s rowing techniques. The lake needs such care.”
Baldoncini noted the challenges of organizing large-scale events but confirmed readiness for this year’s innovations: “For the first time, children will uphold our legacy through their own Palio in Garibaldi Square on July 26. They are future rowers, carriers, and organizers.”
Artist Simona Giudizio’s newly crafted Palio banner for 2025 will be unveiled during the July 20 opening ceremony, preceding a 10 PM historical parade.
Festivities include non-stop medieval reenactments, flag-wavers, tournaments, culinary events, district challenges, and exhibitions. Highlights feature the Castle Fire spectacle on July 21 and the Pitcher Race on July 25.
The “Perla del Trasimeno” award takes special significance this year. It will honor internationally renowned DJ Ralf on July 21 at 10:30 PM, commemorating two late local DJs. An additional Perla prize will recognize Palestinian mayors collaborating with Trasimeno municipalities on the “Land” project.
“Passignano’s Palio atmosphere and massive public participation are extraordinary,” remarked councilor Betti. “Such events enrich Umbria’s timeless village charm.”
