An amendment to Italy’s economic decree, advanced by three majority-party rapporteurs, targets contracts for temporary agency workers. The measure seeks to extend from three to four years the period after which such workers must be offered permanent positions. Center-left parties demand its withdrawal, contending it would exacerbate job insecurity and impose a de facto sectoral reform.
Five Star Movement (M5S) Senate Budget Committee leader Elisa Pirro condemned the proposal: “After the disgraceful amendment Brothers of Italy attempted to insert into the Ilva decree—later retracted due to M5S opposition—the government now targets the economic decree. Extending this deadline fuels uncontrolled precarious employment. FdI, League, and Forza Italia are again sneaking changes into legislation without debate. They must withdraw this shameful amendment and apologize.”
Tino Magni, senator for the Green and Left Alliance and chair of the Senate’s Commission on Working Conditions, stated: “Following the League’s repeated attempts to extend the mandate of Milan-Cortina Olympics manager Simico via amendments, the right-wing now aims to worsen labor protections. This amendment attacks workers’ rights by further destabilizing temporary employment to benefit staffing agencies. Instead of reducing insecurity, they amplify it. The right must withdraw this regressive proposal.”
