Google is expanding its consumer-focused generative AI initiatives with a new web search feature that enables algorithms to act autonomously on users’ behalf. Currently exclusive to U.S. subscribers of Google’s AI Pro and AI Ultra plans, the system prompts users to activate AI assistance when searching for businesses. Upon approval, a voice chatbot contacts establishments—from retailers to hotels—by phone to gather information, compiling detailed reports sent via email or SMS.
Illustrative examples include checking pet grooming prices or dry-cleaning rates. Businesses with Google professional profiles can opt out of interactions with the AI agent. The technology integrates Google’s Gemini chatbot with Duplex, a voice-calling system first demonstrated in 2019 for restaurant bookings and salon appointments.
Google clarifies in its support guidelines that the AI will only call during business hours and restricts tasks to appointment scheduling, wait-time inquiries, operating hours verification, and stock availability checks for high-demand items.
