A series of tragic road accidents across Italy over the weekend resulted in multiple fatalities and serious injuries.
Wrong-Way Crash on Turin-Milan Highway Kills Four**
A head-on collision on the A4 Turin-Milan motorway between the Novara Est and Marcallo Mesero exits (Lombardy/Piedmont border) left four dead and one critically injured. Emergency services (118) confirmed the toll. Highway patrol officers from Novara Est are investigating the incident’s cause. Preliminary reports indicate a vehicle driven by a 70-year-old man, who died, entered the highway traveling in the wrong direction and collided with another car carrying four people. Three occupants of that car died; the fourth was airlifted in critical condition (code red) to Milan’s Niguarda hospital. The crash occurred at kilometer 103+400, forcing the closure of that A4 section and causing major traffic disruptions. Alternate routes via State Road 11 Padana Superiore are in use.
Pregnant Woman Killed in Bari Area Collision**
A pregnant 33-year-old woman from Abruzzo died, and two male passengers (29 and 59) were seriously injured in a collision on State Road 16 near Mola di Bari around 1 AM. Their car collided with a minibus carrying Ukrainian citizens for reasons still under investigation. Three minibus occupants – a 9-year-old boy, a 37-year-old woman, and a 43-year-old man – were also hospitalized in critical condition (code red) at Bari’s Policlinico hospital. Carabinieri are investigating.
Ambulance-SUV Collision in Bari Injures Five**
Five people were injured in Bari around 8:15 AM when an emergency ambulance (118) responding to a code yellow call collided with an SUV on Via Giulio Petroni. The three ambulance crew members suffered the worst injuries. Two were transported to Bari’s Policlinico by colleagues, the third to Di Venere hospital. Two of the five people in the SUV sustained minor injuries. Authorities are investigating the cause.
Double Fatality in Bergamo Province**
Two separate fatal accidents occurred in Bergamo province:
1. A 20-year-old man from Bergamo died in a pre-dawn collision (around 5 AM) on State Road 42 in Borgo di Terzo involving a Fiat Panda and a Mercedes. Carabinieri are determining the cause.
2. A 55-year-old man died around 9 AM after losing control of his motorcycle near the junction of State Road 42 and Provincial Road 591bis. He sustained fatal injuries before highway patrol arrived. This marked the second fatal accident that day on the Valcavallina state road.
