Chamber President Condemns Vandalism of Matteotti Monument in Rome

Lorenzo Fontana, President of Italy’s Chamber of Deputies, has issued a forceful condemnation of vandalism targeting the monument to Giacomo Matteotti on Rome’s Lungotevere Arnaldo da Brescia. Describing the act as “vile and an insult to the memory” of the slain lawmaker, Fontana honored Matteotti as a deputy who “paid with his life for the courage of his ideas and unwavering loyalty to democracy.” The President emphasized that Matteotti’s legacy remains alive in the Chamber, symbolized by the seat reserved for him last year at the precise location where, on May 30, 1924, he denounced fascist violence and electoral fraud.
