Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered Jair Bolsonaro’s legal team to clarify within 24 hours why the former president allegedly violated court-ordered restrictions by displaying his electronic ankle monitor to journalists. Moraes warned that failure to respond by the deadline could result in Bolsonaro’s immediate arrest under Article 312 of Brazil’s Criminal Procedure Code.
The ruling, notified to Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office (PGR), follows Bolsonaro’s afternoon appearance at the Chamber of Deputies where he publicly denounced the monitoring device as a “supreme humiliation.” Earlier in the day, Moraes had barred Bolsonaro from granting interviews, prompting the ex-president to cancel a scheduled session with news outlet Metrópoles. The brief video of Bolsonaro’s remarks at the legislature directly triggered the justice’s 24-hour ultimatum.
