Rescuers have reached a speleologist trapped since yesterday in the ‘Abisso Paperino’ cave at Colla Termini near Ormea, Cuneo province. The caver sustained a head injury from falling rocks and was treated in a heated emergency tent erected 40 meters below ground at the accident site.
Approximately fifty technicians from Italy’s National Alpine Rescue Corps worked through the night in rotating shifts. Their primary task involved clearing three narrow passages using controlled explosions to create an evacuation route for the injured man.
The caver is currently in stable condition. Rescuers installed a dedicated telephone line connecting the accident site to the surface command post. Personnel deployed from eight regions—Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Veneto, Trentino, South Tyrol, Friuli, and Umbria—with specially trained technicians handling the precision detonations.
