Following extensive renovation works, Gorizia’s Great War Museum has reopened, aiming to depict the daily realities faced by Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers on the front lines and civilians in towns and cities. This reopening falls under the Go!2025 Nova Gorica-Gorizia European Capital of Culture program.
Housed within the historic Provincial Museums of Borgo Castello complex, managed by Erpac Fvg since 2016, the revitalized World War I section is conceived as a “Museum for Europe.” The new exhibition design was curated by Alessandra Martina and Lucio Fabi. Visitors journey through ten dedicated rooms, each exploring a specific theme. Exhibited objects – uniforms, equipment, weapons, ammunition, documents, and photographs – guide the narrative of daily life for soldiers and civilians.
Key additions include new multimedia elements and a dedicated section on the memory of the Great War, focusing on monuments and war memorials. Accessibility and usability have also been significantly enhanced for all visitors.
Archaeological artifacts discovered during the renovations are currently under study by the Soprintendenza of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The project also involved work on the adjacent Museum of Fashion and Applied Arts and Casa Morassi. The total project budget for this complex of interventions is €4,862,666.67, with this specific phase costing just over €2.5 million.
