The trial of Mohammad A., a 15-year-old Syrian national accused of belonging to a terrorist organization and aiding an Islamic State bomb plot targeting a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, commenced today in Berlin.
The US singer’s Vienna concert was canceled last year due to security concerns, leading Austrian police to arrest a 19-year-old suspect. Mohammad A. is alleged to have gone beyond mere complicity, reportedly translating bomb-making instructions from Arabic and sending a pledge of allegiance to the terrorist group. German authorities apprehended him in Frankfurt an der Oder, where he attended school.
According to the German news agency DPA, the trial, expected to run until August 26th, will be held behind closed doors due to the defendant’s status as a minor. Mohammad A. is currently free, while the 19-year-old Austrian suspect remains in pre-trial detention in Vienna.
