Unknown hackers gained access to the X account of Elmo, the beloved Muppet character, over the weekend and used it to publish racist and antisemitic threats, along with blasphemous references to Jeffrey Epstein. Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind Sesame Street and Elmo, worked throughout the day to regain full control of the iconic red character’s account, which boasts 650,000 followers and has become a platform for mental health awareness.
International media, including The Guardian, reported the incident. “Elmo’s X account was compromised by an unknown hacker who posted offensive content, including antisemitic and racist posts. We are working to restore full control of the account,” stated a Sesame Workshop spokesperson. Instead of Elmo’s usual messages of encouragement and kindness, followers were subjected to antisemitic threats, racist messages, and the offensive Epstein reference.
The unauthorized tweets were swiftly deleted. However, Elmo’s account profile retained a link to a Telegram channel associated with a user claiming responsibility for the attack.
