M5S Leader Conte Defends PD’s Ricci Amid Resignation Calls, Comments on Regional Alliances

Giuseppe Conte, President of the Five Star Movement (M5S), stated there is “no current reason” to ask Matteo Ricci to step back. Speaking at a Rome press conference, Conte declared, “Asking him to step back would set a bad precedent; it would be tarring everyone with the same brush.” He was addressing calls for Ricci, a PD Member of the European Parliament and candidate for President of the Marche region, to resign.

Ricci responded to Conte’s support, saying, “I greatly appreciated Conte’s words regarding the Marche and agree with him on strengthening safeguards for legality, transparency, and oversight of direct contracts, appointments, and consultancies in the Region. I thank the Five Star Movement. Now, let’s resume the election campaign and change the Marche together.”

Separately, Conte discussed the situation in Tuscany regarding the potential candidacy of outgoing Governor Eugenio Giani. “In Tuscany, we are not imposing any solution; group discussions are ongoing. On my part, there has been no push for a specific outcome. We need to reflect and understand if the conditions exist,” Conte explained. He added, “We opposed this regional government, so joining it under the same candidate would be a considerable sacrifice. It needs careful evaluation, and the conditions will dictate the decision.”
