Russian forces have escalated attacks across Ukraine, disregarding near-daily White House ultimatums. Overnight drone and missile barrages targeted multiple regions including Kyiv, while ballistic missiles struck a military training center in Chernihiv.
Moscow claimed responsibility for the Chernihiv assault, alleging approximately 200 enemy casualties. The Russian Defense Ministry specified that Iskander missiles hit the 169th Strategic Reserve Land Forces training center near Goncharovskoye, followed by strikes using cluster munitions that reportedly caused the casualties. Ukrainian military command, however, reported only 3 deaths and 18 injuries, adding that an investigation has been opened. Officials warned that commanders could face accountability if “actions or inactions” contributed to the losses. This incident exposes a critical vulnerability for Ukrainian forces, heavily reliant on training fresh recruits to counter Russian advances.
The attack marks the third such strike on training facilities since May, with a previous assault causing 12 deaths and 60 injuries—a disaster that cost Ground Forces Commander General Mykhailo Drapatyi his position, replaced by General Hennadii Shapovalov.
Diplomatic efforts remain stalled. Former U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his 10-day deadline for Moscow to cease hostilities or face American sanctions, while acknowledging uncertainty about their effectiveness. “It’s obvious Putin wants to continue the war,” Trump conceded. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the threat, asserting: “We take note of Trump’s statements… The Russian economy is functioning successfully despite Western sanctions. We’ve developed a certain immunity in this regard.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky faces domestic challenges. Parliament is set to vote tomorrow on restoring independence to two anti-corruption bodies, replacing a hastily passed law from last week that curtailed their powers. Zelensky’s initial move had triggered protests in Kyiv and criticism from European allies, forcing a swift reversal.
