** Pacific Tsunami Alert Follows Massive 8.8 Quake off Russia’s Far East

** Nations across the Pacific Rim, from Japan and China to the US, Mexico, and Peru, endured an anxious day under tsunami warnings after a colossal 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. This marks the most powerful seismic event recorded in the region in 73 years and ranks among the ten strongest ever measured globally.

Initial fears of catastrophic damage were largely unrealized. Russian officials reported an unspecified number of minor injuries but no severe structural harm or fatalities. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed, “Thank God, there were no deaths,” praising the correct functioning of all warning systems. He acknowledged the region’s sparse population helped prevent tragedy. The quake, centered 136 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 19 km, occurred during Europe’s night.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) immediately issued tsunami alerts for Alaska, Japan, Hawaii, and Russia. Evacuation orders followed across the Pacific, including China, the Philippines, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador. US President Donald Trump urged citizens via social media: “Stay strong and stay safe!”

Russian authorities recorded tsunami waves up to 5 meters hitting coastal areas, particularly flooding streets and a fish processing plant in Severo-Kurilsk. Residents there were successfully evacuated to higher ground. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry reported no significant structural damage after inspections, noting buildings withstood the tremors. A vacant kindergarten undergoing renovations suffered a partial facade collapse.

Dozens of aftershocks, up to magnitude 6.9, followed the initial quake. Japan recorded waves of 1.3 meters in Miyagi Prefecture, prompting the evacuation of workers at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Hawaii’s highest wave measured 1.21 meters near Haleiwa. Russian media broadcast footage showing violent shaking, furniture overturning, and parked cars swaying. Dramatic CCTV captured a surgical team shielding a patient mid-operation until the tremor subsided. Kamchatka’s governor pledged to recommend state honors for the medical staff’s courage.

Hours later, the Klyuchevskoy volcano, located 360 km from Petropavlovsk, began erupting, adding to the region’s geological unrest.
