Powerful 8.7 Quake Off Russia’s Kamchatka Triggers Pacific-Wide Tsunami Alert

A violent magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean from Japan to the Americas. The U.S. Geological Survey located the epicenter 136 km east of Petropavlovsk at a depth of 19 km.

Tsunami waves up to five meters hit Severo-Kurilsk, flooding the port and town, though residents evacuated safely to higher ground. Initial alerts covered Russia, Japan, Guam, Hawaii, and Alaska, with local authorities reporting “numerous injuries.” Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov urged coastal residents to heed loudspeaker warnings.

Japan recorded waves up to 1.3 meters, prompting the evacuation of workers at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. While tsunami advisories were downgraded for central and southern Japan, alerts remained for northern regions. The Philippines later canceled its tsunami warning after no significant sea level disturbances occurred.

French Polynesia authorities warned of potential waves up to four meters, while China issued a Level Yellow alert for its eastern coast. Alaska experienced initial tsunami surges, with Hawaii downgrading its alert to advisory status. “The worst is over,” stated Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Director Chip McCreery. Emergency officials allowed Hawaiian evacuees to return home but cautioned drivers about local flooding.

Los Angeles prepared for possible impacts despite forecasts predicting minimal wave heights. The Russian Academy of Sciences called the quake—the region’s strongest since 1952—a “unique event,” warning aftershocks up to magnitude 7.5 could continue for a month. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed no fatalities, crediting effective warning systems. Former U.S. President Donald Trump shared safety information via social media amid the alerts.
