A 70-year-old driver entered the A4 motorway in the wrong direction near Mercallo Mesero early this morning, triggering a head-on collision that killed three people. The man mistakenly drove into the overtaking lane believing it was the main carriageway. At kilometer 102, his vehicle struck another car carrying four occupants.
Three passengers died at the scene. The fourth, a young woman, was intubated and airlifted in critical condition to Milan’s Niguarda Hospital. Firefighters joined State Police and emergency medical teams in the response.
The affected stretch of the Milan-Turin highway between Novara Est and Mercallo remains closed as investigations continue. © ANSA
