This volatile weather stems from an atmospheric pressure anomaly, described as an “atmospheric wound” stretching from Northern Europe into the Mediterranean basin. This acts like an “air channel” funneling storm systems primed to trigger severe weather outbreaks.
Saturday’s first wave will bring thunderstorms, with potential localized hail especially impacting the Alps, Prealps, and nearby northeastern plains. Showers, though more scattered, are also forecast for Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Lazio, Marche, and Abruzzo. Conditions are expected to improve significantly on Sunday, July 27th, with sunshine prevailing nationwide except for lingering rain over the Alps. However, winds will strengthen markedly from the north, featuring stormy Mistral gusts exceeding 60 km/h, particularly affecting Sardinia and the central/southern Tyrrhenian Sea.
This respite from severe weather will be short-lived. A major storm system arrives Monday, July 28th. Its rapid onset, coupled with high atmospheric energy and clashes between contrasting air masses, creates ideal conditions for intense thunderstorms capable of producing powerful wind gusts and localized cloudbursts.
