Nearly one in three people in the Gaza Strip endures days without food, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned, adding that “malnutrition is worsening” in the territory, with 90,000 women and children requiring urgent treatment.
Despite ongoing efforts, the WFP stated that the volume of food aid delivered still represents “only a fraction of what a population of over two million people needs to survive.” The agency emphasized that “access to fresh and nutritious essential products like fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and dairy requires the restoration of commercial shipments to Gaza.” As of yesterday, approximately 3,500 tonnes of aid (equivalent to 300 trucks) were reportedly ready for pickup from storage areas and transport into Gaza for distribution.
The WFP further stated that only two border crossings are currently approved for its trucks and stressed the need for “more reliable and safe routes for convoys inside Gaza,” along with an increase in the number of drivers beyond the mere 60 currently authorized by authorities to transport vital food assistance into the Strip.
