The body of 15-year-old French boy Liam Daniel Henry Rezac was recovered this morning in a gully near Valpelline, Aosta Valley, following a fall from the slopes of Becca di Viou mountain above Aosta. His last contact was a GPS message sent to his parents at 6:38 PM yesterday, shortly before the tragedy.
Rezac had ascended the peak yesterday with his parents, who were vacationing in the region. During the descent, he separated from the group. His parents, reaching the valley first, maintained contact until he stopped responding. After waiting for his return in vain, they alerted emergency services around 8:00 PM.
“André Chaussod, an official with the Aosta Fire Brigade, stated, “The alarm was raised around 8 PM. Rescue operations immediately mobilized with 11 firefighters, volunteers, drones, and canine units. The Mayor of Valpelline and five members of the Finance Guard’s Alpine Rescue unit also participated. Searches continued uninterrupted throughout the night.”
The breakthrough came this morning when a Civil Protection helicopter spotted Rezac’s body during an aerial sweep at approximately 1600 meters altitude. It remains unclear whether the teenager left the marked trail attempting to shorten his route or simply became lost.
The search involved the Aosta Valley Alpine Rescue guides, firefighters, the regional Forestry Corps, and the Finance Guard’s Alpine Rescue Service (Sagf). The Sagf is now leading the investigation into the incident’s circumstances.
