Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to Resign Following Election Setback

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has decided to announce his resignation by the end of August. This decision follows the Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) analysis of Sunday’s House of Councillors election, which will be formally concluded in August. The vote proved a debacle for Suga, with the ruling LDP-Komeito coalition losing its absolute majority in the chamber. Prime Minister Suga personally confided his resignation plan to his closest aides, according to a report by the Mainichi daily. This development coincides with the recent agreement on trade with the United States, designed to avert reciprocal 25% tariffs set to take effect from August 1st.
