Italian military police (Carabinieri) have placed a business owner under house arrest in Satriano, Catanzaro province, charging him with illegal labor intermediation, worker exploitation, and extortion against his employees.
The arrest was executed by officers from the Soverato Company and Labor Inspectorate Unit, following a pre-trial detention order issued by the Catanzaro Preliminary Investigations Judge at the request of the local Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities simultaneously seized the entrepreneur’s commercial enterprise.
Investigations began in January 2024 after formal complaints from two employees. According to evidence gathered by investigators, workers endured systematic violations including:
– 10-hour daily shifts despite part-time contracts specifying 4 hours
– Assignment to cashier/sales roles contrary to contracted cleaning duties
– Strict 3-day monthly absence limit with salary deductions for missed days
– Non-payment of social security contributions
– Forced cash restitution of portions of salaries under threat of termination
