The Autonomous Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol) will retain the option to employ public sector workers up to the age of 70, provided the employees consent and the administration demonstrates a specific need. Such needs could include mentoring roles or training new colleagues. This policy, established by a resolution passed by the Provincial Council, modifies existing provincial employment regulations. Provincial Personnel Councillor Magdalena Amhof, who proposed the changes, stated the measure supports generational turnover and ensures valuable knowledge transfer. “At the same time, we can support new employees and promote their personal development,” Amhof added.
The new rules also align the provincial retirement age with national legislation, setting the standard retirement age at 67 effective January 1, 2025, while maintaining the 70-year option. Eligibility for continued employment beyond the standard age requires an “excellent” or “exceptional” performance rating in the preceding two years. Extensions are granted for one year at a time, up to a maximum of three years.
