An Italian doctor already suspended over a botched liposuction that killed a patient has been placed under house arrest after being caught performing illegal surgery in a Rome apartment. Carlo Bravi is under investigation for the death of Simonetta Kalfus last March. The 62-year-old woman died at Rome’s Grassi Hospital in Ostia after being admitted in critical condition following the liposuction procedure performed by Bravi.
NAS Carabinieri (Italy’s health police) executed the house confinement order. They discovered Bravi, whose medical license was suspended after Kalfus’s death, performing an otoplasty (ear surgery) in a bedroom within an apartment in the Quadraro district. A retired nurse was assisting him in the apartment, inhabited by South American nationals.
Investigators described the scene as unsanitary, noting two dogs roaming freely among clothing, shoes, and dirt during the procedure. The retired nurse assisting Bravi has also been formally reported. Authorities are now investigating whether Bravi performed other illegal surgeries between March and his arrest.
