Former U.S. President Donald Trump escalated his attacks on Barack Obama by posting an AI-generated video on his Truth Social platform. The clip falsely portrays the arrest of the former president by FBI agents within the Oval Office.
The video opens with Obama stating, “Above all, the President is above the law.” This is followed by numerous U.S. politicians declaring, “No one is above the law.” The scene then shifts to AI-generated footage showing Obama being handcuffed by two FBI agents in the very office he once occupied as president. Trump is depicted seated and smiling during this simulated arrest. The fabricated video concludes with Obama standing in a prison cell wearing an orange jumpsuit.
Italian political leaders swiftly condemned the post. Matteo Renzi, leader of the Italia Viva (IV) party, stated on X: “With this video against Obama published today, Donald Trump crosses a line, demonstrating the dangerous level artificial intelligence can reach. And above all, it shows the new low the White House can sink to. Solidarity with President Obama. And a message to voters worldwide: those who vote for sovereigntist politicians harm their country’s economy with tariffs, but they also damage the dignity of institutions with fake news.”
Enrico Borghi, IV party Vice President and Senator, added: “We are witnessing a dangerous drift that cannot go unremarked. We do not expect words from Italy’s pro-Trump apologists, because we already know they won’t come. Indeed, as Milan demonstrates, they are already ready to emulate him. However, this notion that institutions are private property with which one can seek revenge and retribution is something barbaric. It must be rejected. And, of course, stay strong, Barack!”
